Free Government Phones

Idaho: Listing of Free Government Phone Providers

Thanks to the Federal Lifeline program, eligible low-income Idaho residents can get help with their phone bills. There are two options:

  1. Receive a monthly discount on a landline phone
  2. Receive a free government phone with free talk/text and data.

While most phone service providers can offer the discounted landline option (call your current landline company and ask), only a few companies offer free phones. Below is a listing of the phone companies servicing Idaho that offer free phones:

This list is not a comprehensive listing of all free phone providers in Idaho. As we come across more providers, we will update the list.

Note: Idaho is one of the states subject to the National Verification process. As a result, residents can apply for Lifeline benefits using the National Verification portal.

Discounted Phone Line Phase Out

FYI: According to the Federal Communications Commission, the monthly Lifeline landline phone discounts are being phased out. By December 1, 2021 discounted phone (voice) service will no longer be available. The $9.25 monthly discount for broadband (internet) will remain constant, but the voice discount is being phased out is as follows:

  • Currently until November 30, 2019 - $9.25 per month credit
  • From December 1, 2019-November 30,2020 - $7.25 per month credit
  • From December 1, 2020-November 30,2021 - $5.25 per month credit
  • Effective December 1,2021 - $0.00

The rationale is probably because more and more people are opting to use cellular service instead of landlines. Unfortunately, those who prefer landlines will either be forced to get a free cell phone or foot the entire monthly landline cost themselves.
