Life Wireless is another phone service provider offering free government phones (Android Smartphone) along with free airtime. They participate in the federal Lifeline/Link-Up program, which allows them to offer free government phones to qualified households.
Life Wireless Regions
Being a regional provider, Life Wireless currently offers (as of January 2018) service in the following states:
- North Dakota
- Puerto Rico
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- Virgin Islands
- West Virginia
If you live in one of the above states, you can visit the Life Wireless website to sign up for a free government phone and phone service.
Because the ultimate eligibility requirement is set forth by the state, it is strongly recommended that you visit your state’s public service commission to find out your state’s requirements. In general, however, if your household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines or participate in one of the following government assistance programs, you’re eligible for free cell phones:
- Temporary Assistance to needy Families (TANF)
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Food Stamps
- Senior Citizen Low-Income Discount Plan (offered by the local gas or power company)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)
- Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
In addition to the above qualifications, if you live on Tribal lands recognized by the Federal government and participate in any of the programs outlined below, you qualify:
- Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
- Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
- Head Start (income qualification applies)
- Tribally Administered TANF
Life Wireless Phone Service and Airtime
Along with the free phone, you’ll receive free airtime. The number of free monthly airtime units vary by state. Also, with the Data Rewards app, you can earn free data.
If you need to purchase additional airtime or data, you can do so via the Life Wireless website or via MoneyGram.
Signing up for Service
To sign up visit the Life Wireless website and click on the “Sign up Now” link. Once there, choose your state and begin the application process. There you can select the airtime units desired and verify your eligibility. To complete the application you’ll need to provide information such as your name, address and phone/email address. You’ll also need your documentation to prove eligibility.
Although Life Wireless does not provide additional information on their website as to how long the process takes, if they are anything like any of the other free government phone providers the application process can take several weeks up to a few months. Therefore, the sooner you submit your application, the sooner you’ll get your phone.
