7/11/13 Update: The Conexion Wireless website is no longer functional. See our updated post on Conexion
Conexion Wireless is another cell phone provider that is approved to offer free government phones and free airtime.
Conexion is a regional free government phone provider. They’re currently approved to offer service in Arkansas, Maryland and West Virginia. As a part of the Lifeline Program, qualified residents will receive a free cell phone along with 100 minutes of talk time.
You may note that Conexion offers only 100 minutes of talk time whereas other carriers such as Assurance, SafeLink or ReachOut Wireless have three different plans talk-time plans with the maximum being 250 minutes.
Those minutes can be used for talking or texting or combination of both. If 100 minutes is not enough, you have the option to “Top up” your minutes, which will cost anywhere from $10-$30 to purchase from 200 up to 1,000 minutes.
Qualifying for Conexion Wireless
As mentioned earlier, you have to live in Arkansas, Maryland or West Virginia and participate in one of the qualifying government assistance programs. These programs include but are not limited to:
- Food Stamp/SNAP
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
Each state has its own set of qualifying programs but the ones mentioned above are accepted by all three of the states. For example, Arkansas and West Virginia residents receiving Section 8 qualify, as do residents in Maryland participating in the Temporary Disability Assistance Program. Fortunately, Conexion has a chart, which lists the qualifying programs for each state.
