Free Phones from Life Wireless

Life Wireless is another phone service provider offering free government phones along with free airtime. They participate in the federal Lifeline/Link-Up program, which allows them to offer free government phones to qualified households.

Being a regional provider, Life Wireless currently offers (as of January, 2015) service in the following states:

Eligibility Requirements

Because the ultimate eligibility requirement is set forth by the state, it is strongly recommend that you visit your state’s public service commission  to find out the eligibility in your state. In general, however,  if your household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines or participate in one of the following government assistance program, you are eligible for free cell phones:

  1. Temporary Assistance to needy Families (TANF)
  2. Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  3. Food Stamps
  4. Medicaid
  5. Senior Citizen Low-Income Discount Plan (offered by the local gas or power company)
  6. Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)
  7. Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

In addition to the above qualifications, if you live on Tribal lands recognized by the Federal government and participate in any of the programs outlined below, you qualify:

  1. Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
  2. Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
  3. Head Start (income qualification applies)
  4. Tribally Administered TANF

Phone Service and Airtime

Along with the free phone you will receive free airtime. The number of free monthly airtime units very by state. In some states Life Wireless offers 125 monthly minutes while in other states they offer the option of 125, 250, 500, 1,000 (for Colorado residents only) or unlimited (for Oklahoma residents only).

If you need to purchase additional airtime, you can do so via the Life Wireless website or via MoneyGram.

Signing up for Service

To sign up visit the Life Wireless website and click on the “Sign up Today” link. There you can select the airtime units desired and verify your eligibility. Next complete the application by providing information such as your name, address and phone/email address and click Submit.

Although Life Wireless does not provide additional information on their website as to how long the process takes, if they are anything like any of the other free government phone providers the application process can take several weeks up to a few months. Therefore, the sooner you submit your application, the sooner you’ll get your phone.
